It’s normal for us to wonder what our financial future holds. Measuring progress toward our financial goals isn’t always a straightforward exercise because numbers often tell only part of the story.
The easy part is examining what you can control; are your spending, saving, investing, and other activities in line with your goals? In other words, are you doing the right things? Are there opportunities to do more in these areas?
The difficulty comes in dealing with factors we can’t control. Have circumstances changed that have or could impact your progress? Is your job safe? Have the markets been cooperating? What about the economy and tax laws?
Just as football coaches make halftime adjustments to their plans in an effort to win, adjustments are a necessary part of the financial planning game. Progress, as measured by numbers, doesn’t occur in straight-line fashion. Many factors are involved and we can’t predict some of them. What is certain is that regular monitoring is an essential part of any financial plan.
